Homo sapiens is a remarkable species. It has many unique characteristics, including abstract culture, upright posture, hands to manipulate objects, and complex social order. A few millenia ago the hunter-gather lifestyle gave way to the development of agriculture. Relentless colonisation of the planet catalysed enormous technological and cultural development. In just the last century we've seen the invention of the computer, the exploration of the solar system by Voyager, the beginnings of an international level of social organisation, and countless other breakthroughs.

However, the future for humanity - and indeed all life - looks bleak in the long run.
